NEWARK -

Newark police shot and wounded an alleged carjacker in the city Thursday afternoon, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials say that the shooting happened around 4 p.m. when a Newark officer came across a late-model BMW that had been carjacked earlier in the day. Police say that the officer tried to stop the car, but that the driver eluded police.

Police say that during the officer’s attempt to stop the car and arrest the suspect, an officer shot the suspect. The man was taken to University Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Authorities did not say if the suspect had a weapon or what lead to the shooting.
