A Monmouth University student died Monday in an early morning house fire.
The fire started around 2:30 a.m. on Prospect Street in Westfield.
Westfield Fire Chief David Kelly says that two people escaped the fire, but that a third did not make it out. The conditions of the two people who escaped were not immediately known.
News 12 New Jersey spoke with a man who says that the victim who died was his best friend.
“He was an easygoing kid. Me and him just had dinner a couple of days ago because everybody was going off to college again,” says Chris Cerrachio. “It was a nice night, but I didn’t know it would be the last time I saw him.”
Cerrachio says that the victim was a Westfield High School graduate.
The victim’s identity has not been officially released.
Authorities did not immediately say how the fire started.
