As Harvey approaches, Sandy victims remember

As a powerful hurricane approaches the Gulf coast of Texas, those who experienced Superstorm Sandy at the Jersey Shore say that they can empathize with what Texans are going through.
Superstorm Sandy left towns like Sea Bright under water. Five years later, parts of the Jersey Shore are still recovering.
“I don’t think everyone was quite prepared for how big it was going to be,” says Sea Bright resident Tanis Colello.
Residents tell News 12 New Jersey that they and town officials learned from the storm and rebuilt the Jersey Shore for the better.
Colello says that homes have been rebuilt with better foundations and many have been lifted higher off the ground to prevent flooding.
Shore residents say that new sand dunes, flood pumps and emergency text alerts help with preparations for storms.
They say that the biggest lesson they learned is to know when to take heed of warnings to leave. Many say that they hope the people in the path of Hurricane Harvey follow the right advice.
“Get out. There’s no reason to stay,” says Sea Bright resident Susie Markson.
“The water gets higher than expected and they get stuck and they have to wait for someone to come and rescue them,” Colello says.
Those who lived through Sandy says that nothing is worth risking a life.
“I mean, we certainly know the struggle and how scared those poor people must be,” Marson says.
New Jersey is also in the midst of hurricane season, and residents are urged to stay weather aware. The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management has information about how to prepare for a hurricane, which can be found HERE.
