Police: ‘Tinder date’ steals family dog, other valuables

A Tinder date gone awry led to the theft of a Bergen County family’s dog, according to police.
Leonia police say that an 18-year-old woman was house and dog sitting for a friend on Aug. 20 when the thefts occurred. The teen apparently made plans to meet with someone she met on the date app Tinder.
Police say that she invited the man, who she had not previously met, over to the home. But police say that two men arrived at the home instead. While the house sitter was distracted by one of the men, police say that the other stole a laptop, an Amazon package and the family’s 2-year-old white Maltese named Maggie.
Police say that they have identified the two suspects and are trying to find them.
Police are asking anyone who may have seen Maggie the dog to give them a call at 201-944-0800 or email tips@leoniapd.org.
Leonia police say that they also want to remind the public of some safety tips while using social media apps:
  • Do not share personal/financial information on social media
  • Meet in a public place when meeting for the first time
  • Tell family and friends when meeting someone new for the first time
