Historians work to save ‘Legend of Watchung’ mural

A historical mural in Watchung is in danger of being lost forever unless the funds can be raised to move it.
A mural depicting “The Legend of Watchung” was painted inside the Sears store on Route 22 in 1965. The legend tells of members of the Lenni-Lenape tribe living peacefully with Dutch settlers in the area that would become Watchung.
The mural is in danger because the Sears store is set to be demolished on Sept. 17. The Watchung Historical Committee wants to move the mural, but it will cost about $40,000.
They want the mural to be taken down professionally so that it is not damaged.
The committee has created an online GoFundMe fundraising site to collect donations. People may also donate directly to the Watchung Community Foundation.
