A former Rutgers football player has had his NFL career cut short because of a false criminal accusation.

Khaseem Greene was initially charged in connection with a shooting outside an Elizabeth nightclub. Greene’s attorney says court documents show that the alleged shooter told police that Greene was the gun supplier.

Those accusations ultimately proved to be false and the charges against Greene were dismissed.

But the damage had already been done. 

Greene was signed earlier this year by the Kansas City Chiefs. But once word got out of the gun charges, he was cut.

Greene says that he wants to take the high road instead of casting blame.

“I'm just happy that everyone knows the truth now and I can kind of move forward from it."

But attorney Josh McMahon says that the prosecutors of the case should be held responsible. He says that they knew the accusations against Greene were a lie, but indicted him anyway. He wants them to pay for defamation and for taking away a professional athlete’s career.

“You're looking at a young man whose dream since he was a little boy was to get out on the NFL gridiron and because of the choices made by certain prosecutors and police, that dream's been taken away,” McMahon says.

Greene says that has not heard from any NFL teams yet - but his lawyer says they will be filing a civil rights action. McMahon calls it a multimillion-dollar case.

Greene was previously signed with the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
