Cedar Grove officials warn against swimming at ‘Devil's Hole’
Cedar Grove town officials are warning people against swimming in a popular spot known as “Devil’s Hole.”
The swimming spot located near Peckmantown and Little Falls roads has been deemed dangerous for a variety of reasons.
A man drowned there in 2014 after jumping off some rocks. Officials say the water is so deep that many have had trouble getting out. Officials also say that the Verona and Cedar Grove sewage treatment plants are nearby and the water sometimes carries some of the discharge.
But the dangers haven’t deterred many from around Cedar Grove from swimming at “Devil’s Hole.”
“It’s really a rite of passage to go to ‘Devil’s Hole,’ usually in your preteens,” says Cedar Grove resident Jacklyn Schmitt.
Cedar Grove police already patrol the area several times a day, but they aren’t able to force people out of the water. A new town ordinance is hoping to change this by making swimming in “Devil’s Hole” illegal.
"We're not concerned about handing out the tickets.  What we're concerned about is the safety.  Safety of our residents and safety or our children,” says Deputy Mayor Joseph Cicala.
The ordinance is expected to go into effect by the end of next month.
Cicala says that people should go to the area to enjoy the nature and beauty of it, but that they should stay out of the water.
