WAYNE -

Funeral services were held Saturday morning for Pompton Lakes police Sgt. Peter Kamper Jr.

The services took place at the Moore's Home for Funerals in Wayne.

Investigators say Kamper Jr. was traveling on Lakeside Avenue in Wayne after midnight Wednesday when he struck a deer with his motorcycle. He was heading home after filling in a shift at work.

Kamper Jr. joined the Pompton Lakes Police Department in 2004. He was 40 years old.

Colleagues say Kamper Jr. was a gentle giant – standing at 6 feet, 6 inches tall. His father is a retired police sergeant in Wayne, as well.

Kamper Jr. also worked as the head fire arms instructor for the junior police academy.
