Skateboarders in Plainfield will have a new place to practice their tricks after a brand new skatepark opened in the city.
Mayor Adrian Mapp cut the ribbon on the Madison Avenue Skatepark Tuesday morning.
The 7,000-square foot park has features for skaters of all ages from novice to pro. It was designed by nationally recognized skatepark designer Mark Wojton and Tsivicos Enterprises, Inc.
Plainfield officials say that the town decided to build the park after noticing an increase in interest among Plainfield’s youth in skateboarding.
“We noticed a lot of youth in Plainfield were skating in unsafe areas – in garages, on the sidewalk. We released that there was a need, there was a growing community of skateboarders, and there was a need for something like this to provide a safe place for the youth,” says Plainfield communication director Jazz Clayton-Hunt.
Officials say that the new skatepark is part of the ongoing effort to diversify recreational opportunities in Plainfield.
