South Brunswick police officers rescued a toddler from a sweltering car after the mother accidentally locked the child inside.
Police say that the mother told responding officers that she stopped at an apartment complex to drop off something for a friend. She says that she left her 18-month-old daughter in the car and thought that she left the air conditioning on.
Police say that the mother returned a few minutes later and found that the car was turned off and her keys were locked inside.
Police say that by the time officers arrived the girl was inside the car for about 20 minutes and temperatures were above 90 degrees. Sgt. Eric Buraszeski broke one of the car windows and was able to get the girl out of the car, according to police.
The toddler was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University hospital to be checked out but is expected to be OK.
Police are urging citizens to never leave a child inside a car.
“In this heat it will only take minutes for someone left inside a vehicle to suffer heat exhaustion or heat stroke. In this case officers were able to quickly intervene and rescue this child,” Chief Raymond Hayducka said in a statement.
No charges were filed in the incident.
