Paterson police say a 17-month-old baby boy survived a three-story fall from a window, narrowly missing a spiked fence.
The baby fell Wednesday night at the Riverview Towers on Presidential Boulevard.
Police say the child’s parents were both home at the time, but the baby was being watched by his 13-year-old sister. He landed in the grass, missing the fence by inches.
“We don’t want it to happen at all, but when you look at this situation, it’s a miracle,” says Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale.
Speziale says that somehow the baby managed to climb onto a chair on the balcony and fell.
Witnesses say that the sister came running outside when the baby fell.
“She ran outside, no sneakers, no nothing,” says that witness.
Police say the teenage sister brought her brother back upstairs, but a security guard was right behind and let the parents know what happened.
"I don't want to Monday morning quarterback, but if I were to give you safety advice, I'd say keep things away from the edge,” Speziale says.
Police said the baby did not seem to have any serious injuries, but he was brought to St. Joseph's Medical Center to be checked out.
Police say that they don’t believe that there was any criminal intent involved in the incident.
