About two dozen Bergen County police officers who were laid off earlier this year may soon be rehired in Hudson County.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino announced this week a partnership that offers jobs in Jersey City to the officers who were laid off.
“It’s a win for Jersey City. We get to hire trained officers. It’s a win for the officers obviously, because they get to stay in the pension and continue police work. And it’s a win for Bergen County because they have worked with us to find employment for these guys,” Fulop says.
Fulop says that as part of the deal the officers who join the Jersey City force won’t have to go through any additional training. They will also be paid based on their experience.
“These are officers that are trained, so they are already in the culture; they’re already understanding police work,” Fulop says. “Being in Jersey City is obviously different than being in Bergen County, but it's North Jersey and they are familiar obviously with the Jersey City landscape. Some of them have roots here."
The city is still finalizing details of the deal with the Civil Service Commission. Fulop says that he would like to see the officers who accept the deal start as soon as possible.
The union representing the laid-off officers did not comment on the deal.
