An 18-year-old has been charged with the murder of 11-year-old Abbiegail Smith.
Andreas Erazo, who appeared in court Friday, is accused of stabbing Smith to death and then leaving her body wrapped in blanket on a rear roof of the Hancock Arms Apartment complex where they both lived.
The Keansburg girl was reported missing Wednesday and the man being charged, Erazo was her upstairs neighbor. Her remains were found Thursday.
Detectives arrested Erazo Thursday afternoon.
"This is one of the worst crimes that I’ve seen as alleged. Anytime there is a child involved. It's truly heinous," said Prosecutor Chris Gramiccioni.
Detectives are still working on a motive for the murder.
They also say Erazo could face more charges once the autopsy is complete. He is now held in Monmouth County Jail.
He will be back in court for a detention hearing next week.
A vigil was held Friday night for Smith near the apartment complex where she lived. She was in the fifth grade.
