Dog who bit mailman gets second chance

VERNON -

A dog who was ordered to be euthanized after biting a mail carrier has been given a second chance.

Officials deemed Gabbana, a 2-year-old American Bully, “vicious” after the dog bit off the fingertip of the mailman in March. A judge ordered that Gabbana be put down.

Owner Jose Galvan tells News 12 New Jersey that he settled with the county prosecutor. Gabbana will need to be labeled “potentially dangerous,” which means that he will have to be put in a kennel and then have a fence around the kennel.

Galvan says that he will have to put up a sign, warning others about the dog and must pay a $150 licensing fee. An animal control officer will come out every month to inspect the dog.

A state statute also requires the dog to have a tattoo warning of the danger, but Galvan says that veterinarians won’t do that because they consider it to be inhumane. He says that Gabbana is chipped, and he may work with the chip company to bypass the tattoo requirement.

Galvan says that he hopes to be able to bring his dog back home by next week. He says that he paid about $60,000 in legal fees to get the dog back.
