A food pantry in Ocean County is looking for volunteers and donations during the summer months.
Ocean County Hunger Relief’s headquarters is located on Germania Station Road in Toms River. The organization held an open house Thursday night to promote awareness of the program and also to look for new ideas for raising funds.
Organizers says that donations are typically down for food pantries during the summer months.
“People tend to forget that there’s a need for the hungry during the summer months,” says board president Jennifer McMahon. “Everyone usually focuses around the holidays.”
McMahon says that summer is especially important for donations because children are out of school. Schools typically provide breakfast and lunches for those in need during the year.
Ocean County Hunger Relief serves more than 6,000 people each month.
“Volunteers are the backbone of our organization, as it would be for any nonprofit,” McMahon says. “But so are donations.”
Anyone who wishes to volunteer or donate to the program can visit the headquarters at 21 Germania Station Road or call 732-505-4357.
