Two distressed swimmers and the good Samaritan who tried to save them were hospitalized Monday after an incident at an Avon-By-The-Sea beach.

Police say that Nisha Desai, 21, was swimming at the Garfield Avenue Beach around 4:20 p.m. when she began screaming for help. Perle Desir, 21, swam out to assist Desai, but also began to struggle in the water, according to police.

Officials say that several good Samaritans, including Carin Diaz, 32, swam out to the two women to bring them back to shore. Bystanders used a boogie board to bring Desir back to shore, according to a news release.

Witnesses previously told News 12 New Jersey that first responders performed CPR on the two women before taking them to the hospital.

Avon police say that Desai and Diaz were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center to be checked out. Desir was also taken to the hospital and was admitted.

A hospital spokesperson says that one of the women is listed in critical condition.

Avon-by-the-Sea beaches do not have a full staff of lifeguards until June 20.
