Woman in stable condition after falling through sidewalk hatch door

A woman is in stable condition after falling Thursday through a sidewalk hatch door where PSEG was performing work in Plainfield.
The 67-year-old woman is seen in surveillance video walking down the sidewalk on Somerset Street and looking primarily at her phone. She then proceeded to trip over an open access door and plunge six feet into the basement of a window pane store. Rescuers responded shortly after 12 p.m. and pulled her out a few minutes later.
Witnesses said a police officer across the street from where the woman fell was able to call for help.
Police said she was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Her condition was listed as stable on Friday.
The metal sidewalk hatch doors were open because a PSEG worker was taking a look at gas lines beneath an apartment building on the block.
