Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno wins Republican nomination for governor

WEST LONG BRANCH -

Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno has won the Republican nomination for New Jersey governor.

Guadagno voted with her husband in Monmouth Beach, after which she said she would spend most of the day on the phone, reminding voters to get out and cast their ballots. She admitted the inclement weather could pose a challenge to some voters.

Guadagno focused her gubernatorial campaign and her platform on a plan that she says would cut taxes by $1.5 billion. Her so-called "circuit breaker" plan has been criticized by opponents as naive, but Guadagno claims she can make the state more affordable.

She had been distancing herself from her current boss, Gov. Chris Christie, during the campaign, notably going against him on supporting the gas tax last year. Christie said Tuesday that he cast his vote for Guadagno.

Guadagno's watch party was held at her campaign headquarters in West Long Branch.

The lieutenant governor also served as an assistant attorney general and was elected Monmouth County's first female sheriff in 2007.
