Phil Murphy wins Democratic nomination for governor

Posted: Updated:
NEWARK -

Phil Murphy won the Democratic nomination to replace Republican Gov. Chris Christie in a special primary election Tuesday.

Murphy, a former Goldman Sachs executive and ambassador to Germany under former President Barack Obama, had the largest Democratic lead on Primary Day since 1989.

Murphy started out as a relative unknown and was the first major candidate to declare his intent to run in the primary. He also outspent all other candidates, having shelled out $15 million of his own money on his campaign.

In Middletown, Murphy told News 12 that it was great to see his name on the ballot and cast his ballot for himself.

Murphy's campaign watch party was held in the ballroom of the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark.
