Newark teen killed by truck while walking home from prom

A Barringer High School senior was fatally struck by a truck Thursday night in Newark while walking home from his prom, authorities said.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said 17-year-old Christopher Gibbs was hit around 11:30 p.m. by a tractor-trailer near the intersection of Route 21 and Fourth Avenue.
The tractor-trailer driver stopped, called for help and attempted to render aid, officials said. Gibbs was rushed to Newark's University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:24 a.m. Friday.
Murray said no charges have been filed against the driver at this time. He has not been identified.
Barringer students and the school's principal said Gibbs, who was the senior class president, was one of the best and brightest to come out of Newark Public Schools.
Grief counselors were on hand at the school.
Gibbs was near the top of his class, headed to the College of Westchester and slated to receive a district award.
