PATERSON -

Police say one person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning at an underground nightclub in Paterson.

The shooting took place near 86 Main St. around 5:30 a.m.

Police say when they arrived they found the victims wounded inside the club and outside in the parking lot.

One person was pronounced dead at the hospital. That victim has not yet been identified by police.

The extent of the other victims' injuries is unknown at this time.

Some neighbors in the area say the illegal nightclub was an open secret, while others say they had no idea it existed.

One man who says he once visited the club described it as a den of illegal activity, with prostitutes and heroin and cocaine use.

Passaic County prosecutors say an investigation is underway.
