AAA calls for increased inspections at gas stations

The Northern New Jersey chapter of AAA is calling for increased inspections of New Jersey gas stations during the Memorial Day weekend holiday.
The agency is asking the New Jersey Weights and Measures Division to closely monitor gas stations over the holiday to make sure owners aren’t price gouging.
“This is not every gas station, but we do have a few dishonest merchants that look to take advantage, especially during the Memorial Day holiday,” says AAA’s Roz Thompson.
Thompson says that there are some things consumers can do to protect themselves at the gas pump.
Drivers should always make sure the gas pump counter is reset to zero before the attendant starts pumping gas.
“Make sure the price per gallon that is displayed is the price per gallon you are receiving at the dispenser,” she says.
Drivers are also urged to check their receipts and change to ensure they paid the correct price.
AAA also suggests drivers watch out for gas stations that increase prices more than once every 24 hours.
Anyone who thinks that they may have been scammed is urged to contact their local consumer affairs department.
Nearly 1 million New Jersey residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more this Memorial Day weekend – 880,000 will be driving.
