President Donald Trump’s sons were on hand Wednesday to preview the U.S. Women’s Open, which will be held this summer at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.
Eric Trump said he’s excited. He said his family has long supported women’s golf, but controversy comes at the intersection of politics and sport.
When asked about possible protests during the golfing tournament in July, officials said the association is trying to stay out of it.
“We appreciate that they are some out there that want to make this a political event. We’re not. This is a gold event for the United States Golf Association. (I’m) really excited about this July,” USGA CEO Mike Davis said.
Pro golfer Brittany Lang wouldn't comment on whether players tried to change the venue.
“The U.S. Open is my ultimate golf tournament, my favorite event of the year. I would never miss it. I’m just thankful that I’m going to be able to play, and it’s just the highlight of my year,” Lang said.
Officials said protesters have the right to gather, but the focus will be making sure golfers and fans are not disrupted.
