Residents living near Teterboro Airport had voiced their concerns about safety issues around the airport prior to a crash that claimed the lives of two people.
The Hackensack deputy mayor and a group of concerned citizens met with the FAA several weeks ago about flight patterns and noise pollution.
Deputy Mayor Kathleen Canestrino told News 12 New Jersey that she was worried about a potential disaster near the airport.
“We need to be proactive before something happens,” she had said. "We are very fortunate there hasn't been an incident in our city, and we are here to make sure it doesn't happen."
But unfortunately a crash did happen Monday as the pilot and copilot of a Learjet crashed a quarter-mile from Teterboro Airport in Carlstadt. Three buildings and over a dozen vehicles were damaged.
Monday’s crash revived some fears of those living near the airport.
“The concern being, as low as they are and coming into an area like this, it is kind of random having an airport right in the heart [of town],” says Rutherford resident Eric Clifford. “It is concerning.”
There have been several other crashes and accidents at Teterboro Airport over the years, including one that involved a plane skidding across Route 46 and crashing after it attempted to land.
The FAA and NTSB will investigate the cause of Monday’s crash.
