IRVINGTON -

A man was struck and killed early Saturday morning after he crossed the Garden State Parkway on foot.

The crash happened around 1:50 a.m. near mile marker 144.

Police say the man crossed the parkway from the northbound side to the southbound side. Officials say the Nissan Maxima he had been driving was reported in a gunpoint carjacking in Elizabeth.

They say a woman driving a Subaru struck him in the left lane closest to the parkway divider.

The man died at the scene. News 12 is told the woman stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.

Traffic has since resumed along the roadway after being temporarily closed as state police conducted a preliminary investigation.

It is unclear why the man ditched the car and was trying to cross the parkway.
