Parents oppose opening of drug rehab center near school
Some Monmouth County parents say that they are opposed to the opening of a new drug rehabilitation facility so close to the town’s school.
Gov. Chris Christie was in Shrewsbury Thursday to promote the official opening of Seabrook House. The governor has made the battle against opioid addiction and drug abuse a major part of his last year in office. He was met by crowds of protesters.
Those opposed to the center say that they understand the need for such a facility, they just do not want it so close to a school.
“We are good with the mission. We understand the process and we want those people have a place to go,” says one parent. “Just not in front of a school.”
Parents say that the facility is too close to a designated walking trail children use every day. The president of the facility says that he wants to assure parents that there's nothing to worry about because his clients are trying to conquer their addiction.
“Addicts who really want to use and succumb to the urge, don't really do that by coming to an outpatient treatment center to stop,” says Seabrook House president Edward Diehl. “They go get high".
Residents of the community also voiced concerns over zoning issues. They say that the services listed on Seabrook House's website go beyond the individual counseling that had previously been offered in the building. They argue that the change requires a more rigorous approval process.
“We’ve been assured that there’s not drugs being dispensed here,” says Mayor Donald Burden.
Seabrook House officials say that they plan to invite neighbors to the facility so that they can better understand what it offers.
