Teen saved from quarry thanks his rescuers
A Passaic County teen who was saved from drowning inside a quarry over the weekend got the chance to thank his rescuers.
Jeremiah Surak, 15, jumped off a ledge at the Prospect Park Quarry Saturday evening while he was exploring with friends.
Police say that when Surak hit the water, which was about 40 degrees, he went into shock because of the temperature. The teen was struggling to get out and told his friends to call the police.
Police say that when officers arrived, they found Surak still struggling. They all swam 50 to 60 yards to bring him back to shore.
“The initial thought, and the only thought, was to get him out safe,” says Prospect Park Officer Arthur Canestrino. “If he wasn’t coming out breathing, neither were we.”
Surak was able to meet his rescuers Monday.
“I’m very thankful that you’re here and that you saved me,” Surak told the officers.
Surak and the four officers who rescued him were treated for minor injuries.
