New Jersey agencies participate in FEMA’s ‘Gotham Shield’ nuclear attack drill
Many of New Jersey’s emergency services agencies participated in a drill to practice how to deal with a potential nuclear explosion attack.
“Gotham Shield” is a four-day exercise organized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. The drill simulated the explosion of an Improvised Nuclear Device in Northern New Jersey.
First responders also practiced triage for thousands of potential victims in need of medical care.
“This forum will expand the ability to coordinate at a local and national level, further developing relationships that will support more effective response and recovery operations during a nuclear incident,” FEMA’s Lauren Lefebvre said in a statement.
Contrary to several rumors posted on the internet and on social media, no actual explosion or detonation occurred during the drill.
One of the agencies that participated in the drill was the Morris County Office of Emergency Management.
