Police officers in East Orange have a message for jaywalkers: "If you walk stupid, you get a ticket."
That's the slogan of a program called "Walk Safe in East Orange," which is aimed at educating the public about the dangers of jaywalking and failing to stop for pedestrians.
The safety effort, which will be coupled with more ticket-writing by police officers, is possible through a $20,000 grant.
Motorists who fail to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks face two points on their license and a $100 fine. Jaywalkers face a $54 fine.
