A woman heading home from church was struck in the head by a bullet during a drive-by shooting Sunday.
Witnesses say they heard anywhere from six to 13 gunshots on Montrose Terrace in Irvington. They say after taking cover and waiting for the shooting to stop, they discovered the victim, Evelyn Evans. Witnesses say Evans? daughter was found crying and holding her head. According to residents, Evans and her daughter were unloading groceries in front of their house when the shooting occurred.
Relatives are praying Evans, 60, will have sight in her left eye after surgery to remove the bullet. She is listed in critical condition at University Hospital in Newark.
Investigators say Evans was an innocent bystander and not the intended target. Police are hoping the public can help them track down the shooter. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
