Mourners gathered Thursday to remember former Newark Police Officer Olga Arroyo as investigators continue to figure out how the 41-year-old died.
Arroyo passed away the day before Thanksgiving. There has been some speculation the woman's death was caused by a botched unlicensed surgery in a Rahway home.
The former officer had been with the force five years until an automobile accident cut her career short. Following her police tenure, Arroyo served as one of the first volunteers on Mayor Cory Booker's campaign.
"I owe her and her husband a debt of loyalty," said Booker. "When I formally launched my campaign for mayor, she and her husband were two of the first five people to join my team."
Arroyo had recently returned to the department as a civilian assistant to Police Director Garry McCarthy. Police have yet to charge anyone with a crime in her death.
