Firehouse construction not done after almost 6 years
Essex County firefighters displaced for six years by firehouse construction are venting their grief.
The fire trucks have been relocated to the South Orange Fire Department's new building, but the firefighters are still staying in the trailers they moved to in 2002 as temporary lodging. "Obviously, something's gone wrong for this building to be like this for six years and not be done," says firefighter Michael Commins.
The relocation was initially projected to last 13 months, but that time has stretched to 68 months. The project's original contractor was fired for slow work, and village officials say the replacement hasn't worked much faster.
