Pizzeria destroyed by 4-alarm blaze

A longstanding pizzeria in Metuchen was destroyed by flames Sunday.
More than 100 firefighters were needed to extinguish a four-alarm blaze at LaRosa Pizza on Middlesex Avenue. Responders were able to save Boro Hardware, which shared the building with the pizzeria. Fire officials say they were able to avoid a more serious situation at the hardware store.
"We did have concerns about fertilizers, propane ? but we were able to isolate that hose stream or have firefighters remove some of those hazards before they ignited," said Deputy Chief Rob Donnan of the Metuchen Fire Department.
Two firefighters needed medical care. One was treated for smoke inhalation, another for fractured ribs.
One of LaRosa's owners told News 12 New Jersey they had already been planning on relocating. The building had been slated for demolition in the next few years due to being purchased by a developer.
