Hardware store in Metuchen destroyed by fire

A fire nearly destroyed a family-run hardware store in Metuchen on Monday night.

Boro Hardware?s storage area and office were completely destroyed as a result of the fire.

"We lost our records,? said Steve Epstein, owner of Boro Hardware. ?Bookkeeping records and everything [were] back here."

Although the retail portion of the Middlesex Avenue store wasn?t completely destroyed, there are many items that Epstein can?t stock anymore because of smoke damage.

Epstein said he will rebuild the hardware store and reopen during the first week of 2008. Boro Hardware has been in his family for three generations.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
