The two captured Union County Jail escapees made an appearance in an Elizabeth courtroom Friday for their arraignment where the judge raised the pair?s bail to $4 million cash each.
The judge said the bail originally set for both Otis Blunt and Jose Espinosa was inadequate considering the circumstances surrounding the case.
Blunt and Espinosa escaped from the county jail in December. Espinosa was found several weeks after his escape in an Elizabeth home with his girlfriend. Blunt was found a day after Espinosa in Mexico City.
At their arraignment Friday, Espinosa?s attorney Marc D?Arienzo said his client was not the mastermind behind the escape. D?Arienzo said Blunt was the one who spearheaded the plan. Meanwhile, Blunt told the judge that he has yet to speak with his lawyer in the case.
Both men were charged with second-degree escape. They are being held at the state prison in Trenton and are due back in court in February.
