Land sale would force Allenwood barracks closure
The owner of the Allenwood State Police Barracks property is considering a sale of the land, a move that would force the barracks to close, affecting three small communities in Monmouth County.
The Allenwood State Police Barracks, located on Allenwood Road in Wall Township, is responsible for patrolling Farmingdale, Shrewsbury Township and Millstone. State police currently rent the barracks.
Police officials say if the Allenwood barracks close, the communities would likely be patrolled by the state police in Hamilton Township, about 30 minutes away.
?It?s not really going to change anything for Farmingdale. It will be the same personnel patrolling. We?re just re-positioning them to Hamilton,? said a state police spokesman.
However, some residents say the extra distance would leave them with a diminished sense of security.
Farmingdale could opt to pay a neighboring community for police aid. However, Mayor John Morgan says that would mean higher taxes for residents.
The barracks could close as early as May 1.
