Police: Driver hits boy in Westfield, drags him 25 feet
A boy is in critical condition after police say a driver crashed into him before knocking a hole in a building Monday in Westfield.
Police say the driver lost control of her vehicle at the corner of Mountain Avenue and Orchard Street. She allegedly jumped a curb, where the 13-year-old victim was walking with his friend. Police say the friend jumped out of the way, but the victim was struck and dragged about 25 feet. He suffered head and chest injuries.
The car continued until it came to rest in a dentist's office, knocking a hole in the building.
The victim was airlifted to University Hospital in Newark, where he remains in critical condition. The driver, who is cooperating with police, was taken to Summit's Overlook Hospital as a precaution.
