Freehold community mourns 2 boys killed by car

The Freehold Township community is mourning two boys Thursday who were fatally hit on a street.

Police say Frederick Eckhardt, 84, hit 13-year-old Kevin Clawson and his 12-year-old friend, Graeme Preston, with his minivan Wednesday night on Bar Harbor Road. Clawson died Wednesday and Preston died Thursday.The boys, who neighbors say were walking and skateboarding in the street near the curb, attended Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School.

Police say Eckhardt will likely not face criminal charges, but may be ticketed.

Neighbors are demanding the speed limit be lowered from 35 mph to 25 mph.
