Milgram investigates college gossip site
New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram has launched an investigation into a college gossip Web site after a student filed a complaint.
JuicyCampus.com is a Web site where college students can go to read the latest gossip about their classmates. Some call it a virtual bathroom wall with nasty rumors about specific people.
Milgram recently stepped in after receiving a complaint from a student who was feeling harassed by postings on the site. Milgram says the site is nothing less than Internet bullying.
?All these postings are anonymous ? anything can be said about an individual and the Web site is doing nothing to make sure there is no offensive or abusive information going out there,? Milgram says.
According to Milgram, her investigators found there was no enforcement on the site and the information on it was not accurate. Milgram says that amounts to consumer fraud because it?s allegedly contrary to the site?s own terms of usage.
Milgram has subpoenaed the site and its advertisers. She says the next step could be a lawsuit.
