Authorities announced the arrests of 42 people with alleged Genovese crime family connections Tuesday in a gambling and drug ring.The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office worked with state police in "Operation Off the Hook." The investigation started seven months ago with officials taking a closer look at five men during a gambling investigation. Four of the five allegedly have ties to the crime family.Authorities began busting the suspects around 5 a.m. Tuesday in Bergen, Ocean, Monmouth and Hudson counties. Officials say three suspects remain at large, but are expected to be apprehended within 24 hours.
Authorities say their initial gambling probe eventually led to the seizure of $5 million, about 15 pounds of marijuana and other drugs during their raids. Officials believe the suspects were selling the drugs and prescription drugs over the phone.The suspects face gambling, drug, racketeering and money laundering charges. Some of the accused include North Bergen High School Athletic Director Jerry Maietta and Ralph Marino, who works for the North Bergen Board of Education.AP wire reports contributed to this story.
