Injured Irvington officer kills armed robbery suspect

Irvington police say an officer who walked in on an armed robbery and was shot Thursday managed to return fire and kill the suspect.

According to police, Det. Roman Melenka was shot in the arm by a suspect attempting to rob a convenience store. Authorities say the officer returned fire, gravely injuring the suspect.

Police say the suspect was then disarmed and handcuffed by the injured officer. The suspect and Melenka were both taken to the hospital following the incident. The suspect died en route.

According to police, patrons and employees were inside the store at the time of the robbery. The entire incident was caught on videotape from surveillance cameras.

Police are seeking a second armed suspect. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest.

Irvington's police chief says the officer is a 24-year veteran of the force.
