2 teen girls found nearly nude, disoriented near church
Police are investigating how two teen girls ended up nearly naked and disoriented outside a South Brunswick church and elementary school Tuesday night.
Police say people leaving a meeting at St. Augustine of Canterbury Roman Catholic Parish, located on Henderson Road, called 911 after they saw one girl partially clothed in the parking lot around 10 p.m.
According to police, the other girl's parents arrived at the scene looking for their daughter, leading officers to use thermal imaging to search for her in some nearby woods. The second girl was also found partially clothed and semiconscious in a field, according to police.
Authorities say the girls, whose names and ages have not been released, might have been drinking. They add that they found no signs of sexual or physical trauma. However, officials have not ruled out that a crime occurred.
"We're giving the girls time to recover so that we can have our investigators sit down, speak with them to get some kind of sense of what happened here last night," says police Sgt. Jim Stoddard.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation.
