Police: News 12 New Jersey helped catch 'time bandit'
Paramus police are crediting News 12 New Jersey with helping them catch a break in the theft of a $42,000 watch.
Police say a suspect caught on videotape stealing the rare and expensive watch from Michael Matthew's Jewelers was identified and turned in by his stepfather following Wednesday's newscast.
"Due to the excellent coverage by Channel 12 News, we had a parent call up and tell us it was his son that committed the theft at Garden State Plaza," said Paramus Police Capt. Kevin Smith.
The suspect, who is a teenager, is facing theft charges. He has refused to tell police what he did with the timepiece.
Police say if the watch doesn't turn up, the teen's parents could be held responsible for the jeweler's $42,000 loss.
