Little Spring mourns principal killed in car crash

Students and faculty at Markham Place Middle School in Little Silver mourned the loss of their principal, who died Tuesday morning in a car crash.

Don Merce, 58, was the school?s principal for nearly 20 years. He was on his way to work when the accident occurred just a few miles from the school.

"This man just touched so many people in so many ways,? parent Diane Davis said. ?He was an amazing, amazing man. He knew everything about every child and he's going to really, really be missed."

As the news of Merce?s death spread Tuesday, former students congregated at the school to honor him. By the end of the day, a flag was hanging at half staff outside the school.

The school is providing counselors for students and staff. The person in the other car involved in the crash remains hospitalized and no charges have been filed.
