Rat problem in Newark building called 'terrible'
Residents of a Newark building say the rodent infestation in their building has made it unfit for living.
The building, at 176 Avon Ave. in Newark's South Ward, is an affordable housing complex that once housed the city?s telephone building.
"Sometimes I'm scared the mice are going to get up in bed with them. That's how terrible the situation is,? says tenant Rachel Foy, expressing concern for her children.
The building manager, who has given residents glue traps, says improvements will be made.
?I'm going to call in [a] professional and I'm going to defer to them,? says Steve Tancer, the property management director of the building. ?Money is no object. We'll spend money where necessary to take care of it."
Newark Vermin Control was in the building Wednesday and is ordering a top-to-bottom inspection. The management company is cooperating. While neither the building nor the management company have not been cited by Newark, the city will likely call for an extermination of the entire complex.
