Police: Man shot, killed after attempted pull over

Police say a chase in Denville ended Thursday morning after a man they tried to pull over was shot and killed when he fled the scene.

Police say an officer tried to top 21-year-old Ruben Walter Martinez for several violations. After Martinez took off, the officer fired and shot Martinez five times.

The pursuit ended after Martinez?s mustang smashed through a fence and went into a backyard pool, police say.

The crash scene is about 150 yards from where the officer tried to make the initial stop at Franklin Road and Route 46 East. On that stretch of road, police say, Martinez's car made several moves that included driving in the opposite direction.

According to Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi, the officer involved in the shooting has yet to be debriefed on the incident.
