Perth Amboy police officer killed in crash

News 12 New Jersey has learned that the Perth Amboy police officer involved in a crash Friday morning has died. The police car was taking a prisoner to a jail in Middlesex County when it hit a car on Route 1 south and Green Street. Patrolman Thomas Raji, 31, was driving the police car and was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Patrolman Matthew Mercurio, 42, was in the front of the vehicle with Raji and was seriously injured. Police say the injuries of the prisoner are not life-threatening. Officials are still trying to determine what caused the accident.
