Booker: Violent Newark weekend not random spree
Newark police are telling the public it can rest easier knowing the weekend's fatal shootings weren't random.
"These were targeted shootings in which individuals were seeking out other individuals for assassination," says Mayor Cory Booker.
Three people were killed in seven shootings between Friday and Sunday. Three others sustained non-life threatening injuries, and a 16-year-old remains in critical condition.
Scott Banks and Nashon Brown, both 20-year-olds from Newark, have been charged with murder in two of the deaths.
Extra police patrols are watching high crime areas like the Seth Boyden housing complex where two of the shootings took place.
Brown and Banks are being held on $1 million bail at the Essex County Jail. Authorities say they have not connected the two men to any of the other shootings.
