Order bans workers' political contributions

Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo issued an executive order Friday prohibiting full-time election workers from displaying signs supporting political candidates on one's person, vehicle or home.

The order also prevents election workers who handle voter registrations, ballots and results from contributing money to political parties and candidates' campaigns.

The American Civil Liberties Union, as well as local scholars, question whether the measure is legal.

County judges and prosecutors already face similar restrictions.
