Point Pleasant plans on laying off police officers

The Point Pleasant Borough plans on laying off six police officers due to a budget shortfall.

The police chief says the reduction on the force would mean the elimination of the entire detective bureau. He says detectives would be put back on patrol and would be unable to investigate crimes in the borough full time. The borough is also asking for the demotion of five officers to help make ends meet.

The council president says all other departments in the borough will see layoffs as well, and that all other workers will also be furloughed for 20 days. The layoffs are due to a $1.6 million budget shortfall.
